AMERICAN CAPITAL OPENS LOS ANGELES OFFICE;
JERI J. HARMAN JOINS COMPANY AS HEAD OF OFFICE AND PRINCIPAL
AMERICAN CAPITAL'S EXPANSION CONTINUES WITH KEY HIRES

Bethesda, MD -- American Capital Strategies, Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACAS), a publicly traded buyout and mezzanine fund, today announced the opening of a new office in Los Angeles, the company's eighth. Joining the company as Head of Office and Principal is Jeri J. Harman. Robert Castillo joins American Capital in Los Angeles as an associate.

"American Capital's new Los Angeles office will allow us to build on the California presence we established with our San Francisco office four years ago," said Chairman and CEO Malon Wilkus. "We will also be able to extend our reach in the West while staying close to our investments. Jeri is a crucial addition to our team of principals as we work towards establishing a national presence in middle market finance. Her investment experience, knowledge of capital markets, and extensive familiarity with the middle market make her the perfect choice to open and head our new office."

Harman has over 18 years of financing experience involving over $1 billion in aggregate transactions. She comes to American Capital from First Security Van Kaspar, where she was Managing Director of Corporate Finance, responsible for leading that firm's efforts in private placements, including equity, mezzanine and debt securities. She has also held senior positions with Coopers & Lybrand and with the private placement investment unit of Prudential Insurance Company of America. She currently serves as President of the Association for Corporate Growth-Los Angeles; Co-Chair of the ACG Middle Market Conference on Mergers, Acquisitions and Finance; a director of MACC Private Equities Inc. (Nasdaq:MACC), and as a resource speaker for TEC Worldwide, an organization of CEOs.

"Jeri's role as Head of Office in Los Angeles will give her a central role at American Capital," said President and COO Adam Blumenthal. "Her demonstrated abilities in finance, team building, and networking in the private equity community will keep American Capital in a good position to serve our marketplace."

Robert Castillo joins American Capital from Finova Capital Corporation's (NYSE:FNV) corporate finance group, where he was investment manager. In that post, he developed and managed the Group's Equity Initiative program, focusing on middle market companies through direct, co-investment and fund investment vehicles. Prior to Finova, Castillo worked in Heller Financial's Corporate Finance Group (NYSE:HF) and as an auditor at KPMG Peat Marwick.
